Angie Davidson, a native of Gaspereau and a musician since her youth, has worked in all areas of the music industry. She has also worked in various capacities with numerous Boards and Community Organizations and as she points out she "sees herself as an organizer", definitely a skill that can be useful for any Board. A huge welcome to both of them. Second, we are pleased to announce that we have entered into a partnership with the Box of Delights Bookstore in Wolfville and are now the permanent tenants of office space in their basement. I am happy to say that Connie Kaldor and Fred Eaglesmith are on the list!! Jayme Stone will be back with us to bring his new "Dances of the World" project to Deep Roots 2010. It's something completely different from Stone / Sissoko, but probably another Juno winner! It explores traditional music based on folk dances from around the world: hornpipes, mazurkas, straphspeys and sambas from Sweden, Scotland, Brazil, North America and more. The album is set for recording right around now with an album release in fall 2010 (Canada) and spring 2011 (US and Europe). It will feature great virtuosity from an all-star band including David Grisman's gravity-defying guitar player Grant Gordy, fiddle pioneer Casey Driessen, Gaelic songbird Julie Fowlis, trumpet great Kevin Turcotte and others. Jayme was also a real gentleman, someone who's a great fit with our community. We'll also be welcoming the Pacific Curls - a group from New Zealand that features the unprecedented combination of Fiddle, Ukulele, Maori traditional instruments, Cajons, Guitar, Stomp Peddles, Percussion and Vocals with lyrics in Maori, Rotuman and English. Kim Halliday a former guitarist and session musician now known for her virtuosic ukulele performances and multi-instrumental expertise as well as her song writing, Scottish-born and classically trained fiddle player Sarah Beattie, and instrumentalist and singer songwriter Ora Barlow with the musical skills of percussion, ukulele and Taonga Puoro - traditional Maori instruments, are artists who best embody the notion of music and culture transcending boundaries till the seams are invisible. They describe their musical collaboration for this unconventional threesome, "We feel a reverence for each others cultures and explore the places where we crossover", says Halliday. Barlow adds "people are looking for culture, for belonging, we hope we create that place that embraces us all." The Deep Roots Music Festival 2010 will take place in Wolfville on 24th - 26th September 2010 . Our first Festival Committee meeting for 2010 will take place in April. The date is yet to be determined. My problem is finding a place in Wolfville to practice singing everyday. I know the music faculty doesn't rent out their studios to non-students, understandably of course. Do you know of any place in Wolfville that can be rented for the purpose of musical practice? I could practice at home, but if I share an apartment or house, it can be a bit loud for the other mates... If you have any help on this issue, I'd be glad to hear any tips! Thanks, looking forward to attend the festival in September, Jade Meunier jademeu at gmail.com 450-539-4088 Deep Roots Newsletter The deadline for submitting copy for the next Deep Roots Newsletter is 5:00 pm Thursday, April 15th, 2010.
