To all of the volunteers, without whom the Festival would not happen, and to my fellow Board Members who meet throughout the year to run the Cooperative, a huge thank you for all of your hard work. A special thanks to Lisa and Francois, both of whom put in hundreds of hours of their time to ensure a great event, you did an incredible job. Peter Mowat Board Chair Volunteer thank you from Li! Our Festival was such a success this year. Ticket sales were double what we had projected, and local businesses were VERY happy with the number of people who came to the area. The artistry of the festival musicians was superb, the musical collaborations sublime. I hope you all got to enjoy a least some of the festivities. (If you didn't see Ari Hest and Coco Love Alcorn sing Coco's song Falling Into You - check that out on YouTube - it is magical!) I missed a lot this year, but have enjoyed watching things on You Tube - there is a lot of great stuff up there! And I am so glad I got to attend the Blues party on Friday night - what a powerhouse event! I want to say a special thank you to all the volunteers who spun the web to make the festival magic possible. On Saturday of the festival there were 175 volunteers working to set up equipment, handle technical matters, sell tickets and t-shirts, feed and house and transport performers and volunteers, welcome and guide audience members, and administer all of that! In the 6 weeks leading up to the festival I was really impressed by the excellent office workers who volunteered numerous full working days. They handled inquiries, sold tickets and merch, prepared information packages and name badges for our various festival teams, balanced floats, authorized credit card slips, did daily banking and reconciliations. Every person played an important part to create Deep Roots 2009 and I was completely thrilled to be at the centre and see it all happening. In August someone asked me "Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Deep Roots?" and my quick and honest answer was "The volunteers!" What a fantastic group of people we are, eh!?! Thanks all of you for being part of our Deep Roots Music Cooperative. I am hoping to hold a Festival De-briefing session on Wednesday November 18th from 7 till 9 p.m. If you would like to take part in the session of looking back at the 2009 Festival and brainstorming for improvements in 2010, let me know please by emailing lisa at deeprootsmusic.ca Pictures of this year's Deep Roots Music Festival To see wonderful pictures of this year's Deep Roots Music Festival courtesy of Bruce Dienes, please go to our website and click on the links there. Enjoy! http://deeprootsmusic.ca/festival/ Lisa Hammett Vaughan Festival Coordinator Deep Root Music Cooperative Board of Directors The Deep Roots Board is happy to welcome two new members: Julie Harris and Bernie Young. Julie has attended Deep Roots since it began and has taken on the role of Treasurer. Bernie has just spent the past year coordinating the Publicity team for our 2009 Festival. We are lucky to have these two energetic people to join our group. The DRMC Board is now composed of: Chelsea Brewster, Colby Clarke, Gerry Davis, Lisa Hammett Vaughan, Julie Harris, Jeff Hennessy, Kathleen Hull, Marie Jardine, Peter Mowat, Debbie Roza-Mercier, and Bernie Young. Search for a new programming coordinator Francois Cote has done an amazing job of choosing festival artists for us these past 4 years, and dedicated hundreds of volunteer hours to the task. We have been very lucky to have his musical expertise. He is now pursuing a change in careers, and is not planning to program the 2010 festival. We need to find a programming coordinator for next year's festival. There have been some suggestions of other ways to accomplish the work that needs to be done of selecting and securing performers for the festival. The Board is drafting a call for proposals and will soon send it out to this email list, and email lists of arts boards and MusicNS. If you know of someone who should know about our need, please help them to get the information! The Deep Roots office We are very happy with the financial results of the Festival this year. It encourages us that we may soon be able to have a permanent office and even some paid staff!! As a baby-step toward this goal, we have recently hired a part-time bookkeeper and rented a storage unit for our office equipment. We need a committee of people to write grant proposals for us now - some important grants have proposal deadlines in February. Can you help? If you can, contact office at deeprootsmusic.ca Stan Carew and Breeze and Wilson at the Al Whittle Theatre on December 3, 2009 Deep Roots will present Stan Carew and Breeze and Wilson at the Al Whittle Theatre at 8 pm on December 3, 2009, at which time they will be introducing their most recent CD release. Tickets can be bought at The Box of Delights for $20 ($1 service charge per ticket) or through Ticketpro (Ticketpro.ca). Tickets bought through Ticketpro can be mailed for a service charge of $3.00 per ticket or picked up at The Box of Delights ($1.00 service charge). Jane Cayford is coordinating this event and would like some volunteers to help her out. The musicians will arrive late afternoon for sound check. It would be really nice if someone could offer them supper in their home. (Last time they were here, a volunteer made them a wonderful supper and brought it to the green room at the theatre, but if you've seen that room, it's not a great place for dining.) She will need about five volunteers for front of house: two to sell tickets, one to take tickets at the door, and two to sell CDs. As soon as the posters are printed, she will need some volunteers to distribute them. If you can help in any way, please get in touch with her at cayford at eastlink.ca John Kavanagh's new CD now available at The Box of Delights John Kavanagh's latest CD, Just Small Rooms, is now available at The Box of Delights bookstore on Front Street in Wolfville. John was this year's posthumous recipient of the Deep Roots Valley Arts Award. His CD sells for $15. Strategic Planning Thank you to those of you who took the time to give your input on the online survey regarding our Strategic Planning for Deep Roots - we got 67 responses in the end. The words you wrote are being heard - All of the comments have now been given verbatim to the Deep Roots members participating in the Strategic Planning meetings. The planning meetings are being held the evenings of October 15 and 22 and November 5, at Kingstec. Board members and a few others are taking part. I am enjoying the planning process and am looking forward to the final product - a 3 year plan for Deep Roots!
