Blue Christmas = Blues Fundraiser in February We've decided to move the "Blue Christmas" event to February - we're thinking of a Blue Valentine Dance instead. We will keep you posted! Board of Directors The Deep Roots Board accepted the resignation of Chelsea Brewster. Chelsea will continue to volunteer at festival time with the Concessions team. Thanks, Chelsea. The DRMC Board is now composed of: Colby Clarke, Gerry Davis, Lisa Hammett Vaughan, Julie Harris, Jeff Hennessy, Kathleen Hull, Marie Jardine, Peter Mowat, Debbie Roza-Mercier, and Bernie Young. Strategic Planning Thank you to those Deep Roots members who have been participating in the Strategic Planning meetings. We held a 4th meeting on November 12. Our discussions helped us focus ourselves on the work ahead in the coming few years, as well as clarify our long term vision. I am looking forward to the report from ACSBE which we will have in a few weeks time. I will share the information with anyone who is interested - please feel free to contact me. Peter Mowat Board Chair Search for a new programming coordinator The Board is still working to find a programming coordinator for next year's festival. There have been some suggestions of other ways to accomplish the work that needs to be done of selecting and securing performers for the festival. Our call for proposals went out to email lists of arts boards and MusicNS. If you know of someone who should know about our need, please help them to get the information! Deep Roots grant writing help We need a committee of people to write grant proposals for us now - some important grants have proposal deadlines in February. We already have 2 volunteers and could use 2 more. Can you help? Headliners Black Umfolosi, the Zimbabwe kings of "Gumboot Soul", will be sharing the stage with local talent J.P. Cormier, Lennie Gallant, Catherine MacLellan, and Chuck & Albert (formerly of Barachois). The show starts at 7:30pm, tickets cost $25 and are available at the Acadia Box Office, 542-5500 or 1-800-542-TICK. The money raised will go to USC Canada's Seeds of Survival, an award-winning program that works with scientists and farmers around the world, to help people stay on their land, to grow more food for their families, and to preserve and enhance the environment. "At this special time of year, as we celebrate with friends and family, I think it's important to think about the people around the world who are responsible for the crops we harvest, and the food we eat. And I think it's also important to do something about the 1 Billion people around the world who don't have enough to eat. By coming out to this benefit, you'll be helping farmers and scientists in Africa to develop ecological solutions to the age-old scourges of drought, pests, and hunger" says Brian McFarlane, the Fundraising Director of USC Canada. About Black Umfolosi: Much loved around the world, Black Umfolosi offer their sweet sounds of acapella with their marvelous harmonies and gospel singing as well as their captivating dancing including the gumboot dancing of South Africa. This bare-torsoed, hard-hatted group, never fail to captivate their audience and encourage them on to the stage to join in the performance.
