Farewell to John Kavanagh
It is with a heavy heart that I write to say that John Kavanagh has passed away.
John has been central to our musical community for many years. He taught and
shared his music with us in his jovial, gentle way. His generous spirit and his
wonderful musicality will be missed by many people. I expect there will soon be
some footage available of John?s Ukulele group performing at the AMP Fest. For a
glimpse of John at Deep Roots 2007, go to
http://www.shadowsandlight.ca/uncategorized/john-kavanagh/ . To hear his
fantastic skill on the ukulele, go to his website at
http://c1.ezfolk.com/John_Kavanagh/. The
word is that John?s son Andy is coordinating a tribute concert ? check Facebook
or watch the Community Events emails for more information.
Bill Coon ? Jazz Guitarist of the Year
The Kate Hammett-Vaughan and Bill Coon concert produced by Deep Roots last month
was excellent. A number of people in the audience had heard Kate before but many
of us were introduced to Bill for the first time - and what an introduction it
was! The guy is an amazing guitar player. And we learned this week that Bill
Coon has just been acclaimed Jazz Guitarist of the Year by the National Jazz
Awards. Congratulations, Bill!
First 2009 Deep Roots Music Festival Committee meeting
Thursday, May 28, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.,
Flowercart, 9412 Commercial St, New Minas
(next to the golf course and opposite Evangeline Middle School)
Thinking of getting involved with Deep Roots this year? Do you have some time to
spare? One hour or a hundred? One time or on-going until the festival? At home
or participating in groups? All participation is welcome - we could use your
help to make Deep Roots what we are envisioning it to be. (Remember - volunteers
who put in 15 hours or more are entitled to a festival pass and a voting
membership in the Deep Roots Cooperative! Some people like to get their
volunteering done during the year so they can relax and enjoy the festival in
September.)
Mark May 28 on your calendar and make it a point to come and see what is going
on and how you might be able to help. Whether you are already in a workgroup or
not, come out and hear what's going on. Workgroup representatives from Publicity
and Programming, will report on their recent work and outline their next steps.
There will be a chance to mingle and talk, sharing ideas, plans and challenges.
I hope to see you there!

Throw Down Your Heart, a documentary film featuring B?la Fleck
This film is part of the Fundy Film Documentary series (see also
http://fundyfilm.ca/films/documentary/)
Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 7pm, Acadia Cinema's Al Whittle Theatre , 450 Main
Street, Wolfville, NS
Directed by Sascha Paladino - Starring B?la Fleck
90 minutes
United States
English
B?la Fleck?s music has always gone beyond the definitions of a single genre, and
in this charming documentary, he goes beyond the boundaries of the Western
hemisphere on a heartfelt personal and cultural mission to Africa. While most
think of the banjo as quintessentially American, Fleck, a virtuoso ambassador
for the instrument, journeys through Uganda, Tanzania, the Gambia and Mali to
uncover the roots of the instrument, revealing the true origins of the sound
while meeting with remarkable African musicians.
This film has a perfect tie-in to this year's Deep Roots Music Festival - check
out Jayme Stone ( http://www.jaymestone.com ) and Mansa Sissoko
(http://mp3.mondomix.com/mansasissoko ). With 2007's Juno award winning CD, The
Utmost, banjoist Jayme Stone proved his mastery of the modern possibilities of
the banjo, following in the footsteps of mentors Tony Trishka and B?la Fleck
with his fusion of musical genres. Then, from a journey to Mali in search of the
African roots of the banjo, Stone returned with an inspired collaboration with
Malian griot and kora maestro, Mansa Sissoko. The resulting CD, Africa To
Appalachia, won this year's Juno award for best World Music recording. These two
will be performing at Deep Roots 2009; expect to be entranced by Sissoko's
soaring vocals and by the shimmering interplay between his 21-string kora and
Stone's banjo.
Call for volunteers
The fundraising committee is organizing an event for June 20th and we need
volunteers. We are looking for people to staff the event which will be an all
day concert. We need stage hands, door people, raffle people, 50/50 draw people
and anyone who wants to work on organizing the actual event. We need about 20
people. You will work in shifts so you can also enjoy the event. Working this
event also lets you add up hours toward a weekend pass for the festival in
September. (A minimum 15 hours is required.)
We are also looking for donations for the raffles. If you have a service to
offer like gardening or snow shoveling, accounting, law services, anything you
can volunteer for a prize. CD's, artwork, antiques... Donations over $100.00 get
advertising at the event and passes for certain Deep Roots events. Let us know
whatcha got!
Email me if you want to help: thecoppergirl at hotmail.com
Thanks,
Marie - Fundraiser
