Deep Roots Newsletter Plans and activities for the 2009 Deep Roots Year Throughout the winter Fran?ois C?te and his programming team have been working diligently to plan a program for this fall?s Deep Roots Music Festival that will once again touch our hearts and blow our minds. Just like gardeners poring over seed catalogues and dreaming of harvest-time bounty, our programming group has been discussing possible artists, themes and collaborations. The exciting moment of formulating the seed order has come! The first Festival artist we will sign this year is the incomparable Harry Manx. Harry just won the Maple Blues Award for Acoustic Act of the Year, and Folk Alley, a listener-supported NPR affiliate radio station, chose Harry's most recent release "Live at the Glenn Gould" for their "Favorite CDs of 2008" list. Steve Poltz and Coco Love Alcorn?s concert ? our first fundraiser of the year - was a wonderful way to invigorate us after a long winter. From here on the momentum just builds and builds as we roll toward Deep Roots Music Festival 2009! Join in the early excitement of the Deep Roots community. Plan to come to the second fundraising concert of 2009 on April 29th. Kate Hammett-Vaughan really IS my sister, even though we spell our surnames differently (She uses a hyphen and I don?t!). She is also a great Canadian jazz singer. We aren?t planning any shows for May ? We?ll all be at the AMP Fest! But in June we hope we?ll have a Blues Blow-out again. AND a plan for a fun June or July fundraiser is in the works now! I will be calling the first meeting of the Festival Committee in April as well. Many members of last year?s committee are returning to work on this year?s festival. And we have recruited a new coordinator for our Publicity workgroup. We are glad to welcome Bernie Young who is picking up where Sheila Dick left off. We can still use more Festival Committee members though. Spreading the word, coordinating groups, planning new community initiatives, researching and fundraising are the main areas in which you could be of help prior to the Festival weekend. If you feel you have time to give and skills to share in order to help build this year?s festival, please let me know. (You could come to the first Festival Committee meeting just to see how you might fit in??) Looking forward to a great year of creativity and collaboration!
