I want to thank the Deep Roots community for the cool ride, over the last four years. To be entrusted with a budget and given carte blanche to build a festival program was quite a privilege. Who wouldn?t like that? Along with the memories of great music, the human connections made through shared purpose with Artists and fellow festival volunteers made the whole thing very rewarding. I want to thank Lisa and commend her for her dedication to Deep Roots. She continues to give more of herself than anyone. I also want to thank Jane who, among many things, worked with me on over 100 Artists? contracts, always well organized, always efficient. Always great also to work with Jennine whose masterful management of hospitality, since year one, has done so much to make Wolfville a special place for visiting Artists. And I particularly want to thank the whole ?sitesters? team, those who work year after year on sites / venues / production management and logistics, with frequent, focused and fun meetings. Terry, Rick, Peter, Brian, Graham, Warren, Colby, Don, Kirk, Dave, Stan, Andy, Darrin, Linda, Jim, James, and then John, Nick, Harry, Steve, Ellis, Merce and many more the part of the ?job? I?ll miss the most is certainly the one I shared with you. We can all be proud of the success of the last festival. It?s great to see Deep Roots in better health than ever. I?m looking forward to a great 2010 festival and many more shared memories of wonderful musical events in Wolfville, in the future. Cheers, Francois Deep Roots Music Cooperative announces New Programmer for Deep Roots Music Festival 2010 December 13, 2009 - Wolfville, NS The board of directors of the Deep Roots Music Cooperative announces the departure of current Programmer Francois Cote and the appointment of incoming Programmer David O?Leary. Francois Cote has acted as Programmer of the Deep Roots Music Festival from the third year in 2006. He introduced audiences to a multitude of wonderful musicians from across North America. His commitment to and passion for producing a series of successful festivals and events has been instrumental to the growth and popularity of the annual Deep Roots Music Festival. Chair of the Board, Peter Mowat says ?We are extremely grateful for Francois? enormous contribution to Deep Roots over the past four years. We are fully aware that Deep Roots? reputation as a first-class festival rests substantially on his work as the Programmer and we hope that his affiliation with Deep Roots will serve him well in the future?. David O?Leary has been synonymous with music in Margaretsville since 1999, playing a major role in the development of the Fundy Folk Society, and subsequently as manager of the Evergreen Theatre, where he continues to bring in professional acts from across the country. His commitment to the arts also extends to producing the annual West Kings High School productions. He has been a founding member of a number of Cooperative projects including the Evergreen Ecological Co-operative which helped its members build homes inexpensively on cooperatively owned land, and Good Cheap Foods, a food co-op in Halifax which allowed its members to buy bulk vegetables and natural foods. He has a vested interest in the community he serves and continues to look for new challenges. Chair Mowat says ?We are thrilled to have David on board. His longstanding commitment to music makes him the ideal candidate to lead the festival?s continued growth and success. He will be inheriting a flourishing festival with a team of dedicated volunteers.' The Deep Roots Music Festival 2010 will take place in Wolfville on 24th ? 26th September 2010 welcoming a host of musicians from across the nation. For more information or to get involved as a volunteer, visit www.deeprootsmusic.ca Artists who performed at the Deep Root Music Festival receive Canadian Folk Music Awards The Canadian Folk Music Awards were presented in Ottawa in late November. Here's the beginning of a CBC report on the winners. Some of us were introduced to these folks this year at Deep Roots. (Thanks for the great programming, Francois Cote!) >From CBC news, Nov. 23, 2009: Joel Plaskett's triple album Three earned the Halifax singer-songwriter a double win at the Canadian Folk Music Awards on Saturday. Although the roots rocker did not attend the Ottawa event where prizes were given in 19 categories, Plaskett's friend, banjoist Old Man Luedecke, picked up his awards for Contemporary Album of the Year and Producer of the Year. Co-hosted by CBC's Shelagh Rogers and La Bottine Souriante musician Beno?t Bourque, the fifth annual awards ceremony at the Dominion Chalmers United Church in Ottawa featured performances by bluegrass outfit Yonder Hill, banjoist Luedecke, Ottawa Valley fiddler April Verch and Canadian folk veteran Valdy. Former Ottawa resident Chris McKhool rivalled Plaskett as a double winner. His Toronto-based band, Sultans of String, took the award for Instrumental Group of the Year, and his CD FiddleFire! was named Children's Album of the Year. Jayme Stone and Mansa Sissoko picked up the award for Best World Music Group for their CD "Africa to Appalachia". Early Bird Passes make great Christmas gifts!
