Arts Award nominations are open The Valley Arts Award is presented to someone who has given distinguished service to the arts in the Annapolis Valley. The award was first presented in 2004 to the late Jack Sheriff, founder of the Theatre Arts Festival International and the Kipawo Showboat Company. In 2005, Sara Lee Lewis, co-founder of Mermaid Theatre and long-time supporter of music and theatre arts in the Valley, accepted the second Valley Arts Award. Chet Brown, a man who has spread music in our community for half a century, received it in 2006. In 2007, the award was given to Jack McDonald for his steadfast support of musicians in the area. For his creative work with Mermaid Theatre and for mentoring many Valley artists, Jim Morrow accepted the Valley Arts Award last fall. Presented at the festival each September, the Valley Arts Award recognizes someone who is, or has been a resident; has worked for the development and/or promotion of Valley artists, arts events, and/or culture; and has made a significant long-term contribution to the arts in the Valley. Nominations for the 2009 award are being accepted. They should be in the form of a letter or e-mail outlining the contribution the individual has made to the cultural life of the region. Please provide names and contact information for two references as well. Send them to Wendy Elliott, The Kings County Advertiser, P.O. Box 430 Kentville, N.S., B4N 3X4, or e-mail welliott at kentvilleadvertiser.ca. Donate Junk Jewelry and Baubles! Last year's "Fancy Hats and Crowns" workshop was a great success, in large part due to the type of craft materials people had donated. Feathers, glitter, junk jewelry and beads all inspired the children to create fantastic headgear! Please watch at yard sales and rummage sales for treasures such as these which could be used in the "Fancy Hats and Crowns" workshop at Deep Roots 2009. We welcome your donations of any appropriate craft supplies. For further info, contact Festival Coordinator Lisa Hammett Vaughan - lisa at deeprootsmusic.ca Emerging Artists Program This year we are proud to be launching our Emerging Artists Program, thanks to funding received for 'Cultural Opportunities for Youth' from Nova Scotia's Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. The program is being coordinated by Stan Beland. It will give musicians between the ages of 14 and 25 opportunities to learn how to promote themselves in the music business. Enrolment is limited to 20 emerging artists. Workshops and practical experience will help them to grow their skills when it comes to marketing, recording, playing to a live audience, and getting noticed by record labels. The program will take place over two weekends, September 12-13 and 19-20. The first three days include instruction and mentoring in workshops with industry professionals like musician Heather Kelday and shameless self-promotion expert and K-Rock DJ Darrin Harvey. On the final day of the program, the emerging artists will play a showcase at The Al Whittle Theatre to put what they've learned into action. As a bonus, 10 emerging artists will be selected to play at the Deep Roots Music Festival on Saturday September 26th. The $125 fee includes 6 workshops, meals during the workshops, a showcase performance, and a Festival Pass that gets the participant into all main stage and workshop events during the festival weekend. For more information, or to apply, e-mail Stan at events at deeprootsmusic.ca Deadline for applications is September 9th, 2009. Party Food for Tickets - You can help!
